Chutiya Ram EssayTour Dutt was born on meet 4, 1856 in Bengal and she died on August 30, 1877, in the prime of her youth, at 21. She is often called the Keats of the Indo-English literature for more than one reason her meteoric rise on and slice from the literary firmament, as also for the quality of her poetry.James Darmesteter pays a befitting tribute to her, The daughter of Bengal, so admirable and so strangely gifted, Hindu by race and tradition, and an English woman by education, a French woman at heart, a poet in English, prose writer in French, who at the age of 18 made India acquainted with the poets of French herself, who blended in herself three souls and three traditions, died at the age of 21 in the full bloom of her talent and on the eve of the awakening of her genius, presents in the history of literature a phenomenon without parallel. Literary Achievements Toru Dutts literary achievements lay more in her poetic actions than in her prose writings. Her poetry is meagre, consisting of A Sheaf Gleaned in French Fields and Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan. But she compels attention as KRS Iyengar puts it. Her poetry has sensitive descriptions, lyricism and vigour. Her only rick to be published during her life eon was A Sheaf, an unassuming volume in its overall get-up.The Examiner in its August 1876 issue published the review of her book. Edmund Gosse, the hence reviewer expressed his surprise To find Miss Toru Dutt translating, in incessantlyy case into the measure of the original, no less than 166 poems, some of them no less conglomerate in form than perplexing in matter. He calls it an amazing feat and a truly brilliant success. A review in the Friend of India says. the versification is broadly good, and the translations, we believe, intelligent and faithful. In selecting poems for translation Toru focused attention on the Romantics of French literature, although she also included Chenier, Courier, Lamartine and a few others of the transition period as hearty as Brizeux, Moreau, Dupont and Valmore who were not Romantics. In France, the Romantic school was born towards the close of the 18th century and in the beginning of the19th, as in England. They asserted the free-play of imagination, simple and direct diction and freedom from any restrictions. The poems that she translated were probably those which could touch the cord of her imaginations and sentiments patriotism, loneliness, dejection, frustrations, illusions, exile and captivity. One remarkable thing about her translation is that she has been able to mother the spirit of the original. No wonder, then, that Edmund Gosse, in his review says, If modern French literature were entirely lost, it might not be found impossible to reconstruct a great number of poems from its Indian version. Not that she has blindly translated. In fact, she has changed words and phrases of the original and substituted them by more appropriate ones without any hesitation wh ich make her work exact and yet free. The verses maintain the rhythm of the original. Though European by education and training, Toru was essentially an Indian at heart. From her childhood her mother had imbued in her passion for the old legends from the Puranas, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. Her readings of the old Sanskrit classics gave her first-hand knowledge of the charming stories. Her womans imagination wove myriad coloured picture and she embarked upon her work, Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan, which appeargond in 1882, with Introductory notes by Sir Edmund Gosse. Critics use up hailed Ancient Ballads as the best work in English. It shows her keen interest in the Indian translations. According to Lotika Basu, a literary critic, Ancient Ballads, for the first time reveals to the West the soul of India through the medium of English poetry. In fact, scholars are profuse in their praise of this work for its finely-knit verses full of vigour and variety. The stories included are of Savitri, Lakshman, Prahlad, Sindhu and others. Toru wrote two novels Bianca and Le Journal de Mademoiselle dArvers. The former, an incomplete romance, is in English and the latter in diary form, is the story of Marguerite and is in French. The manuscripts of these whole kit were discovered after her death amid her papers. Both these works have simple plots which sustain the story element, the language is poetic and the characters are clearly drawn. Toru was proud of Indias cultural heritage, her flok-lores, myths and legends, and its rich classical literature. Though English by education, she was an Indian through and through. E. J. Thompson wrote about her, Toru Dutt remains one of the most astonishing woman that ever lived . Fiery and unconquerable of soul. These poems are sufficient to place Toru Dutt in the small class of women who have written English verse that can stand.

Sherlock Holmes And Christopher Boone English Language Essay
private detective Holmes And Christopher Boone English Language EssayIn Mark Haddons short-story, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time Christopher Boone, the protagonist has suggested several times that he, doing virtually detective work himself, is rattling much like Sir Arthur Conan Doyles far-famed character, principal investigator Holmes.Based on the protagonists rum behaviour and thoughts, many people think that he has some kind of mental illness. And, as he is so much like secret agent Holmes, who is a rather peculiar figure himself, we can absorb the main similarities and differences between the two fictional characters. As of Holmes character, I chose to pick the BBC adaptation of 2010 and 2012, because it is much closer in time and setting than that of the original stories. still, onwards starting the list, lets see what the main syndromes of Asperger argon, the assumed mental illness of Christopher. The severity of Asperger can vary from mild to severe. They usually do non tolerate comfortably any changes and often have obsessive r come forthines. They generally have a special interest, in which they argon really good. At young age, these symptoms can make to rigidity, but later in adulthood it actually might result in a sumptuous carrier. Especially if we considerate their ability to learn affectionate skills as oppo internet sites can learn how to ride a bike. But, at least at the beginning, they cannot always read body language and other non-verbal language and cannot handbill proper body space and they often avoid gaze. They appear to be particularly sensitive to particular sounds, touch, light, to which other people are not. This causes a really strange and odd behaviour sometimes. As a result, their mates will often see them an startsider and mock them for this. It will not help to hush this situation the fact that people who suffer from Aspergers syndrome have an innate naivety and a commonplace IQ, but have extr aordinary skill in a particular part. In terms of their use of language, they calculate to develop like everyone else. However, they often have a larger amount of vocabulary than others of their age, and also they are really straightforward in their choice of words. In other cases, they might encounter some hardships in language usage in social environment.1 at present that we have seen the main symptoms of Asperger, we can go on to the examples from Haddons work and how much they actually apply for its protagonist, Christopher. Parallelled to this, we will see the similarities and occasional differences between him and private eye Holmes. near scientists even presume that Holmes has many symptoms of Asperger, thus was the first character (although fictional), who suffered from this kind of mental illness, even thought it was described first in 1944 and acknowledged however in 1994.2Others think that Doyle, due to his medical studies, may have known some of these symptoms.3Firs t of all, as we have seen, the main characteristic of this illness is be antisocial. In the short-story, Christopher does not seem to know many people, nor does he desire to. His some important contact is with his father, with whom he lives and who understand him and is able to deal with his sons illness, on the contrary to his own mother. His mother wrote Christopher this, how she could not cope with the strange behavior of his son, but how patient was his father usually with him. After his father he mentions especially a lot Siobhan, the school-psychiatrist, who helps him and tries to t each(prenominal) him about social contacts. Moreover, she is one of the few who can draw Christopher out from his usual uncommunicative state. Similarly to the role of Siobhan in the boys life, Dr. Watson constantly tries to keep Holmes from hurting others feelings, and in general tries to motor him to behave in a socially acceptable manner. In some way, he is the normal counterpart of Holmes ab normal life.4Lestrade Weve found Rachel.private investigator Holmes Who is she?Lestrade Jennifer Wilsons only daughter. But, interestingly, the boy occasionally can overcome his difficulties and for some time can maintain a normal conversation with the old lady. Parallelly, Sherlock does not seem to have many friends, but still is more social than Christopher, he does not have a problem with talking to anyone. make up though both of them seem to encounter difficulties at the area of social contacts, the also both try to improve their skills. In the short-story we often read that Christopher says or does something just because he is told that is the proper thing to say or do. For example, when Ed Boone, his father prepares him some meal, we readAnd I s aid, Thank you for supper, because that is beingness polite.5In BBC Sherlock, in the episode Scandal in Belgravia at the Christmas party, Holmes jabbers a enormous and quite rude monologue about Mollys especially coquettish looks, with which she wishes to seduce a cabalistic boyfriend. When it turns out it is actually Sherlock with whom Molly is in love with, thus humiliating Molly in front of the whole room, Holmes finally apologies. For a abbreviated moment we can see Watsons face, which is clearly surprised by Sherlocks apology. From this scene we can see how he tries to redeem the insulting things he said out loud.In connection with this antisocial behavior, people who have this illness, tend to have some problem with emotions and their recognition. At the very beginning of his book, Christopher shows us some drawings of smileys. He says he can understand happiness and sadness, but not the other facial expressions which indicate more complex emotions.6It seems he is somehow insensitive to most kind of emotions. It especially shows in his choice of words and straightforwardnessAnd Mrs. Alexander said, Your mother, before she died, was very good friends with Mr. Shears. And I said, I know. And she said, No, Christopher. I m not sure that you do. I mean that they were very good friends. Very, very good friends.I thought about this for a while and said, Do you mean that they were doing awake? And Mrs. Alexander said, Yes, Christopher. That is what I mean.It seems that even death does not really bother him. This characteristic is found in Sherlock Holmes, too. In fact, this is his one of his most famous features being the man of logic and not that of emotions. For example in the morgue, in the same episode of BBC Sherlock, the Holmes brothers see a family on Christmas Eve who probably disordered a relative and they are, of course, devastated. But they just watch them, sayingSherlock Holmes Look at them. They all care so much. Do you ever marvel if theres som ething wrong with us?Mycroft Holmes All lives end. All hearts are broken. Caring is not an advantage, Sherlock.7Moreover, in The Hounds of Baskerville where Holmes deliberately poisons his only friend, and when Watson questions him about it, he does not seem to be very bothered about the matter.John Watson So you got it wrong.Sherlock Holmes No.John Watson You were wrong. It wasnt in the sugar. You got itwrong.Sherlock Holmes A bit. It wont happen again.8It is very important to note that on the contrary of Christopher, Sherlock can actually pretend any kind of emotion just to get some information, he easily manipulates anyone without a bit of regret.Sherlock Holmes Mrs Monkford?(She turns to him snifflyly.)Mrs. Monkford Yes.Mrs. Monkford Sorry, but Ive already spoken with two policemen.John Watson No, were not from the police were (Sherlock holds his hand out to her, his voice tearful and tremulous.)Sherlock Holmes Sherlock Holmes. Very old friend of your husbands. We, um(As she sh akes his hand, he looks down as if fighting back his tears.)Sherlock Holmes we grew up together.Mrs. Monkford Im sorry, who? I dont think he ever mentioned you.Sherlock Holmes (still tearful) Oh, hemusthave done. This is this is horrible, isnt it?Sherlock Holmes I mean, I just cant believe it. I only saw him the other day. Same old Ian not a care in the world.(He smiles tearfully at her.)Mrs. Monkford Sorry, but my husband has been depressed for months. Whoareyou?Sherlock Holmes Really strange that he hired a car. Why would he do that? Its a bit suspicious, isnt it?(By now he has tears running down his cheeks.)Mrs. Monkford No, it isnt. He forgot to reincarnate the tax on the car, thats all.Sherlock Holmes Oh, well, that was Ian That was Ian all overMrs. Monkford No it wasnt.(Instantly Sherlocks fake persona drops and he looks at her intensely.)Sherlock Holmes Wasnt it? Interesting. In general, Holmes is quite rude to everyone, including Watson, and also, he sees himself as the o nly normal human being in the world. Here are two very good example of this from the first episode of the series, A Study in PinkSherlock Holmes Took me less than an hour to find the right skip.John Watson Pink. You gotallthat because you realised the case would be pink?Sherlock Holmes Well, ithadto be pink, obviously.John Watson (to himself) Why didntIthink of that?Sherlock Holmes Because youre an idiot.(John looks across to him, startled)Sherlock Holmes No, no, no, dont look like that. Practically everyone is.And elsewhereSherlock Holmes Anderson, dont talk out loud. You lower the I.Q. of the whole street.9(A Study in Pink)This feature shares also Christopher, when he talks about his schoolmates and he states that he is the only normal among them. Both of them are aware of their special skills, therefore both of them are quite proud, almost arrogant. Christopher, without any trace of modesty, is a hundred per-cent sure he will get his A-level in maths. Holmes, too, is always sure h e will solve the case, and when he makes an error, he is quite reluctant to admit it (see the The Hounds of Baskerville conversation above). They both has their special area of interest, although Christophers is much narrower (only maths) than Holmes, which includes everything from biology and chemistry to observation and deduction. They both tend to shut down when they occupy themselves with their work, they do not eat or speak for long hours, in some extreme cases, even for days. However, unlike Sherlock, Christopher has a range of special rules which tend to interfere with his everyday life, for example the quality of the day is base on how many red or yellow cars he sees on the way to school or he cannot eat his meal if they touched each other on his plate. They do not only tend to shock people with their lack of emotion, but also with their actual behaviour, thus both of them being outsiders in some way. For example, at the beginning of the story, Christopher hugs the dead, bloo dy dog. That is surely something most normal people would not do. Similarly, at the beginning of The Hounds of Baskerville, Sherlock suddenly appears at the door, covered in blood, nearly giving poor Watson a heart attack. He explains he could not come home earlier because not a taxi would take him, so he had to travel on the metro. Also, at the beginning of The Blind Banker, Holmes meets his old acquaintance from the university. This man briefly mentions what an outsider was Sherlock even at that time, due to his extraordinary skills.Sebastian We were at uni together. This guy here had a trick he used to do.Sherlock Holmes Its not a trick.Sebastian He could look at you and tell you your whole life story.John Watson Yes, Ive seen him do it.Sebastian Put the wind up everybody. We hated him.The description mentioned as one of them symptoms the sensitiveness of touch, light or smell which others are not even aware of. Christopher does not like to be touched by anyone, even his own par ents. Sherlock does not have any of this problem, but he does share the special ability to observe and remember people and characteristics which other people do not even see. When Christopher meets someone, he tends to mention the colour of his shoes, which is completely irrelevant, but still important to him. In the series, this ability of Holmes is illustrated by fancy texts which appear on the try out when he is observing someone, or he has many, rather inapprehensible monologues where he explains his deductions to the others. It is really interesting how similar is the way they both save their memories. Christopher describes it as a DVD, which he can rewatch again and again with the same accuracy, and Holmes has a mind palace where he can wander around and find the appropriate information. As a curiosity, both the short-story and the series mention the deerstalker, one of the most famous symbols of Sherlock Holmes, but in these works this hat does not seem to get as much attentio n as all the other adaptations of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Christopher writesIn the original Sherlock Holmes stories Sherlock Holmes is never described as wearing a deerstalker hat, which is what he is always wearing in pictures and cartoons. The deerstalker hat was invented by a ma n called Sidney Paget, who did the illustrations for the original books. And in the series, at the beginning of The Reichenbach FallSherlock Holmes Why is it always the hat photograph? Sherlock Holmes What sort of hat is it anyway? Sherlock Holmes Is it a cap? Why has it got two fronts?John Watson Its a deerstalker.Sherlock Holmes You stalk a deer with a hat? What are you gonna do throw it? Sherlock Holmes Some sort of death frisbee? Sherlock Holmes Its got flaps ear flaps. Its anearhat, John. John Watson this isnt a deerstalker now its a Sherlock Holmes hat.As we can see, there are many similarities and differences between these two characters. But in general we can say that the detective is much more functional and effective than Christopher, only a little peculiar.SourcesAlbrechtAlbrecht, Karl Ph. D. Death Penalty Argumentative Essay
Death Penalty Argumentative EssayThe expiration penalisation is the ultimate punishment. in that location is no harsher punishment than end itself. Currently fifty-eight nations practice the finale penalisation. Our nation, the coupled States of America, is one of the fifty-eight nations that practice the stopping point punishment. Currently the United States go away only use the demolition punishment, if one generates first-degree murder. Individuals that believe in the stopping point penalty believe that outstanding punishment leave alone deter murderers. In this paper, I will be contestation that the finish penalty does not deter criminals and that the United States should outlaw the practice. Before I get ahead my argument, I would like to provide some background schooling regarding the death penalty to the readers. The idea of chief city punishment was brought everyplace from Britain, when the founding fathers decl bed independence. Our ancestors loved the ide a of the death penalty, since it was a common recrudesce of support. Europeans gave the death penalty for various villainys. The first recorded execution in America occurred in Jamestown, 1608. A man named George Kendall was executed for t reasonableness. In the earlier colonial days, laws regarding capital punishment varied atomic number 18a to area.During the nineteen century, the death penalty changed dramatically. Around this time the death penalty started to lose popularity. States no longer committed humankind executions. All executions were done in private. Pennsylvania was the first state to adopt this trend. Eventually some states abolished the death penalty all together. In current times, cardinal out of fifty states no longer carry out the death penalty. These states are Alaska, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Rhone Island, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. In addition, a series of cases re garding the death penalty went to the lordly Court. legion(predicate) tried to argue that the death penalty violated the eighth amendments and that capital punishment is cruel and unusual. In 1972, Furman v. Georgia successfully brought an temporary end to the death penalty for ten years. Eventually the death penalty was reinstated with the execution of Gary Gillmore on January 17, 1977.As of today, the United States quieten practices capital punishment. However there are limitations. For example, the government ceasenot execute the mentally handicap and is not supposed to execute juveniles. The United States currently has six ways to execute, lethal injection, electrocution, lethal gas, a firing squad and hanging. Methods will vary state by state. Although the United States still practices the death penalty, executions are declining, compare to the past, fit in to statistics. Those that are for the death penalty claims that the death penalty will serve as a deterrence and is t he only way for retribution against murderers. Both issues are highly debatable and have been a subject of criticism.Punishment as a deterrence has been a goal for ages. This concept does work, but it should not be applied to all criminals, in my opinion. Pro capital punishment individuals claims that it is an efficient deterrence against criminals. In the denomination Death penalty is a deterrence, the authors claims that by practicing the death penalty, violent crimes will decrease. violent crime has declined 11 percent, with murder showing the largest decline at even more than 22 percent. We believe that this has occurred in part because of the strong signal that the death penalty sent to violent criminals and murderer.1These statistics chance uponn from this article may be inaccurate and should be closely examined. There is a huge amount of conflicting evidence from similar studies done currently and in the past.Retribution has also been a goal for punishment. Logically if a killer whale is put to death then there would be no more killings. American society seems to favor retribution. An eye for an eye has been a law for ages. In a pro death penalty article, the author believes that, When someone takes a life, the balance of justice is disturbed. Unless that balance is restored, society succumbs to a rule of violence. Only the fetching of the murderers life restores the balance and allows society to show convincingly that murder is an intolerable crime which will be punished in kind.2This ideology has mevery flaws, chiefly with morality issues. For example, if the country is punishing one for killing, what gives the country the right to kill? Both articles fail to present any solid evidence that supports their thesis. Death penalty is a deterrence had statistical information, but fail to present how the information was obtained. Depending on the researchers information gathering methods, the statistical information could have been different. For examp le In an article in the Ohio State Journal of Criminal Law, Dr. Jeffrey Fagan of Columbia University describes numerous serious errors in recent deterrence studies, including im beseeming statistical analyses and missing information and variables that are necessary to give a full picture of the criminal justice system. Fagan writes, There is no reliable, scientifically sound evidence that shows that executions can work a deterrent effect. These flaws and omissions in a body of scientific evidence render it unreliable as a basis for law or policy that generate life-and-death decisions.3There needs to be solid evidence in order to prove a theory. Those who claim that the death penalty is an efficient deterrence fail to submit determinate evidence, therefore as a critic, we should dismiss the claim that the death penalty works as deterrence. In addition, many studies seem to disprove the theory that the death penalty is a safe deterrence against violent crimes and murders. According to the Death Penalty breeding Center, states without the death penalty have had lower murder rates. In their seventeen-year old study, states without the death penalty showed a 40% decrease in murder rates. In regards to the article Death penalty is a deterrence, New York has now abolished the death penalty and their murder rate has gone down significantly compared to when the state was still practicing capital punishment. In fact, in the first year that New York abolished the death penalty they saw a four percent decrease in their murder rates. The reason why the death penalty does not serve as deterrence is that offenders do not believe they will be caught. Logically, no one would commit a murder, if one knew he/she was to be executed. Deterrence is a psychological process. Therefore, if an offender does not believe that a real risk is present, there will be no deterrence. The death penalty as retribution no longer makes sense in our current society. By executing an offender, our g overnment, is sending unperceivable messages regarding murder. The point of capital punishment is because the United States government wants to express that killing is an intolerable crime. By killing, an offender the government is contradicting itself. In addition, the death penalty can be seen as revenge. We are simply taking an eye for an eye. Two wrongs will not make a right. Killing a murderer will not bring back the murdered. In the 21th century our criminals laws should now reflect a higher standard that an eye for an eye.In current times, the death penalty can no longer be claimed as an efficient form of retribution. There are huge delays in carrying out the executions of an inmate. Statistics show that there is over an eight-year wait before an execution can take place. In fact, most death wrangling inmates die of old age, before their execution sentence. Californias death row is a great example. Since 1976, only thirteen inmates have been executed. Currently there are ar ound seven hundred inmates in Californias death row. If the trend continues, that would concoct most of the inmates would die of natural causes before their execution sentence can be carried out. Those that claim the death penalty as retribution fail to take notice of the execution process in our criminal justice system. Legally an inmate is allowed to conjure up his/her case. Appealing is needed in the American criminal justice system because the process is designed to protect against human errors. An average appeal can take over ten years. There are simply not enough adjudicate to response to all case reviews. For example, the United States Supreme court receives thousands of case reviews annually, but because there are only nine resolve in the Supreme Court, only a handful of cases are reviewed. For these reasons, the death penalty cannot be claim as an efficient form of retribution.Since the death penalty is no longer an affected punishment, I purposed that we abolish the pra ctice in the United States. Throughout Americas history, many have tried to abolish the death penalty. Many were successful in temporary abolishing the death penalty, but most states reinstated the death penalty after judicial review. The most current issue regarding the abolishment of the death penalty was Baze v. Rees. Baze V. Rees, was an attack on the process of execution, specifically lethal injections. Baze argues that lethal injections is a form of cruel and unusual punishment and went against the constitution. That debate ultimately failed, since the judges ruled in favor of the death penalty. The trial court held extensive hearings and entered detailed Findings of Fact and Conclusions of Law. It recognized that there are no methods of legal execution that are satisfactory to those who oppose the death penalty on moral, religious, or societal grounds, but concluded that the procedure complies with the constitutional requirements against cruel and unusual punishment.4Baze V. Rees was a good attempt in trying to abolish the death penalty, but ultimately was unsuccessful because they were attacking the process not the problem. In addition, Baze fail to show any solid evidence that lethal injections may cause pain.In order to abolish the death penalty in the United States successfully, one would need to make a case to the United States Supreme Court. One would need to submit a writ of either certiorari, mandamus, or prohibition. In addition, one can appeal against the death penalty. If the case were selected, then one would need to argue that the death penalty is no longer a form of justice. The key to winning this case, in my opinion, is to present solid and conclusive evidence. Show the nine justices, that the death penalty is a waste of resources and unconstitutional. Some may criticize that by abolishing the death penalty, crime rates will increase. Studies have already shown that the death penalty will not deter criminals. Currently there is no solid e vidence that proves that the death penalty will deter criminals however, there is evidence showing that states with no death penalty has a lower murder rate than states with the death penalty. In a recent examination, researchers concluded that the estimates claiming that the death penalty saves numerous lives are simply not credible. In fact, researchers stated that using the same data and proper methodology could lead to the exact opposite conclusion that is, that the death penalty actually increases the number of murders5. Conclusive evidence such as the fact should part any criticism regarding the death penalty and murder rates. The death penalty should be abolish. Those that believe in the death penalty, failed to make their case. There is no conclusive evidence that supports their claims. There is evidence however that the death penalty is failing. Executing a death row inmate is no longer an easy task. There can be long delays in the execution process. Inmates are dying befor e their execution sentence can be carried out. For all the reasons stated above, the United States of America should abolish the death penalty.Work CitedDeath Penalty Curriculum A just society requires the death penalty for the taking of a life Agree, MichiganState Universityhttp//deathpenaltycurriculum.org/node/10Death Penalty Information Center, Discussion of Recent Deterrence Studies, Berkeley Electronic Presshttp//www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/discussion-recent-deterrence-studiesDeath Penalty Information Center, Discussion of Recent Deterrence Studies, Ohio State Journalhttp//www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/discussion-recent-deterrence-studiesGeorge E. Claire LiuHon History 9, per 8Ms. FowlerDecember 12, 20131920s Positive and Negative ChangesThe 1920s in America saw numerous changes in the US. The postwar trends and fear of communism, and rise of many groups like the Ku Klux Klan effected the American citizens. Feelings of nativism spread as Quota acts were passed and the Labor movement loses appeal. Two presidents- Calvin Coolidge and Warren G. Harding effected the government in different ways. Technology advancement in cars and electricity triggered urban sprawl and the induction plan. Science and religion clashed with the Scopes Trial and Prohibition. The role of the American women changed and the Harlem Renaissance provided a way for African Americans to express themselves. Overall, the 1920s had a more positive effect on society. In the 1920s, American Industries flourished under President Calvin Coolidge. Both Coolidge Herbert hoover preferred governmental policies that kept taxes low and byplay profits high. They fit the pro-business essence of the 1920s perfectly. High tariffs helped American manufacturers, government management in business was decreasing, and wages were increasing. The automobile was the main support of the American economy from 1920-1970. It greatly transformed the American countryside and civilization. Some of the various changes included Paved roads, traffic lights, motels, billboards, base of operations design, gas stations, repair shops, shopping centers, freedom for rural families, independence for women and young people, and growing cities. By 1920, 80% of worlds vehicles were being driven in the U.S. This lead to Urban Sprawl- when cities spread in all directions. The American airline industry started carrying mail and eventual... ...ted by mobsters (criminals, gangsters) in their quest for territory to distribute alcohol. With the installment plan, everything could be bought on credit. It allowed people to buy goods over an longer period, without havi ng to pay much money at time of purchase. However, there was a central weakness, piddling economic prosperity, people sunk into debt. The 1920s gave negative impacts as well with the country being divided, rise of anti-immigrant socialist parties, labor unrest, corruption in the government, and organize crime. The decade known as the roaring 20s had more positive effects on society than negative. The birth of modern America began with electricity, automobiles, and radio. The modern women emerged with more uncommitted jobs and more time to manage their families and finances. The 1920s were a big step into what has become of the US today.

Name and Chance of Success Essay examples -- Black and White Names, So
According to all the support certificates from California dating from 1961 to 2001 DeShawn, DeAndre, Marquis, Tyrone, Imani, Ebony, Shanice, and Aaliyah are the down(p)est label a person could have (Levitt and Dubner 169-170). The whitest places are Jake, Connor, Tanner, Wyatt, Molly, Amy, Katie, and Madeline. This starkly demonstrates that black and white parents ca-ca their children differently (Levitt and Dubner 168-169). Additionally more black boys have names that are unique in nightspot than white boys do (Fryer and Levitt 776). These cultural variations raise questions that stem from why and what does it mean? Will a name change the outcome of an individuals spirit? Do names lead to different success rates in job acceptance, Income level, or personal accomplishment? If so, is the name really the cause of much(prenominal) outcomes or is it perhaps only a proxy for variables such as race or socioeconomic status? Evidence from audit studies, statewide birth certificate data, and African American naming trends stemming from the civil rights movement support a correlation between name and chance of success. Correlation does not sympathise causation, however, so there may be more at play. Name is an indicator of socioeconomic status and that status is what will have an effect on chance of success.Audit studies show the correlation between name and chance of success. They test how names affect success rates in job acceptance. These types studies contain of sending two identical rsums to prospective employers except one rsum contains a white sounding name and the other contains a black or ethnic sounding name. The ratio of the white sounding applicants being called back for an interview versus the ethnic or black sounding applicant in then record... ...the 44th president of our United States. To these men, and many others in the world, the meaning of their name, or what their name connotates about their history or race, did not stop them from succe eding in society. The people who are born into lower class locality and carry a distinctively black name are only less likely to succeed, however, it does not mean that they wont. Just as a person born into a wealthy neighborhood is more likely to succeed but isnt insured of it. Names, although a proxy for socioeconomic status, will not be a deciding figure in a persons life. Of style it can be easier for a person to succeed who come from a wealthy educated family, and of course it can be harder for a person to succeed who comes from an uneducated poor family, but it is those factors, not a name, that will affect the chances of ones success in todays society.
